Everyone sits in the order that they were born in. It’s a rare form of identification. Jonas is the 19th. Fiona is the 18th. Peirre is 20th. This was the day that they received their assignments. The chief elder was standing on stage. One by one he called them by their number of birth. The chief elder starter speaking and 1st person was a girl name Madeline her assignment was Fish Hatchery. The 2nd person was Inger her assignment was Birthmother. The 3rd person was Issac his assignment is Instructor of Sixes. Then the chief elder began his speech about Asher and the chief elder started talking about how he always said I want a “smack” instead of “I want a snack.” This ends chapter 7.
Why do you think this happened? I think that a big part of this is to boost up the intensity and to show how much anxiety Jonas is actually feeling and add emotion to the story. Also gives you a better idea of the setting and the tension. You imagine it more sever when he gets skipped.
“He hunched his shoulders and tried to make himself smaller in the seat. He wanted to disappear, to fade away, not to exist. He didn’t dare to turn and find his parents in the crowd. He couldn’t bear to see their faces darkened with shame. Jonas bowed his head and searched through his mind. What had he done wrong?”
