Life of Teenagers in 50s

The word Teenager was created in the 1950’s due to the most population of those in this age and because teenagers started gaining more independence and freedoms. Teenagers were able to buy more things like food, clothes and music because of an increase in spending money.

Teenagers were also becoming more independent in the type of music they preferred to listen to, no more listening to what their parents liked. The loved the rock and roll type of music.

Growing up as a teenager prior to World War II, teenagers were expected to take life seriously. Males were likely to join the army and provide for their family.

The television and AM radios were really popular in the 1950s the devices really attracted the teenagers.

In the 1950’s, teenagers were more encouraged to attend college, find a skill, and lead a good life.Their parents had more than gone through the depression and a number of wars, and now wanted a better life for their children.

Changes in clothing styles, started to appear. Guys started having their hair longer with sideburns and put back with grease. They also wore jeans and leather jackets with the collar turned up to look “cool” and the girls wore ponytails, poodle skirts, pedal pushers, and scarves.

  2. Pedal Pushers are calf-length trousers. They kind of look in style to the “Capri Pants”.

    Those are Capri pants.
